Barbados- Harrison’s Cave Eco-Adventure Park
At the heart of Barbados lies one of its greatest wonders – the magnificent Harrison’s Cave. Located in the central uplands of the island, this crystallized, limestone cave is characterized by flowing streams, deep pools of crystal clear water and towering columns. Gaze in wonder at the white flow stones and in awe at the beauty of the speleothems which adorn the cave.
In 1981, Harrison’s Cave was officially opened to the public. The Boyce Tunnel, named after equipment operator Noel Boyce who broke ground to open the cave’s natural passageways, leads to the entrance of the cave. Beyond this point, Harrison’s Cave is a massive stream cave system that is at least 2.3 kilometres long. Interior temperature is an average 27 degrees Celsius and its Great Hall, which is the largest cavern, is 15 meters tall. Harrison’s Cave is regarded as an active cave since it contains water. It is also very much alive because its stalagmites continue to grow, albeit slowly in geological terms—less than the thickness of a sheet of paper every year.
